Will I try that Next?

The following is a combination of my response to today’s prompt for #reverbbroads11 (Did you taste any new flavors this year? Did you love or hate them or something in between? Will you incorporate these new flavors into your life? from Bethany) and my reflection on my #oneword2011. Yep, hard to set the multitasking aside.

When I chose my One Word pseudo-resolution for this year, I was thinking in terms of moving forward on my dissertation, on new opportunities for my husband and I in regards to our careers, on exploring new places with my girls.

What I didn’t expect was that I would try what could be considered small nexts:

  • I have never been a big fan of seafood, but this year, I tried different three types of seafood: salmon, tilapia, and calamari. What did I discover?  I don’t dislike seafood; I hate seafood. I live in the Great Lake State. One would think that I could find something  that came from the water I would find edible. Nope. Please send condolences to my husband, the big seafood fan.
  • I also joined forces with my Salt Sisters to push the conversation on how we support and develop women leaders. Not a collaboration I would have anticipated, but it has been one hell of a ride. Can’t wait to see wait to see what 2012 holds for our crew.
  • I also took advantage of some smaller conferences that I have never attended before, like WISA Drive-In and GLACUHO (even though I am not in housing). I highly recommend smaller conferences for getting to know people, since they facilitate networking like no large conference can.

I am moving forward on all of the nexts that I originally set out to see. But this year was also a great reminder for this Type A, that sometimes not planning is the best plan of all, and sometimes, the smaller steps forward are exactly what you need.
